In keeping with the philosophy of the entire music school, the string program emphasizes the complete artistic, professional and personal development of the musician, addressing not only technical skills but also nurturing creativity through exposure to technology and encouraging the business savvy required to market and manage one's career. The faculty, which includes several members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, works to customize the curriculum to match the individual needs, aspirations and goals of each student.

Duquesne string students may find favorable employment opportunities through arrangements with local companies, including the Pittsburgh Ballet, Pittsburgh Opera, and top suburban symphony orchestras. A student-produced newsletter offers additional updated information about employment opportunities, events, grants and career assistance.
