Resource Network Gala Event
On
October 4, 2007, the Parent Resource Network (PRN)
held a gala at Le Mont Restaurant to celebrate
the "kick-off" of the organization.
PRN is dedicated to sharing personal support,
knowledge and experience to families in need during
the difficult times associated with having a child
born prematurely with a chronic illness and/or
birth defect.
Andrea Scheve, MM, NICU MT, MT-BC, Director of
UPMC Medical Music Therapy, was invited to present
Music Therapy
and to provide entertainment throughout the evening.
Andrea (far right) brought her past intern and
Duquesne University graduate Karen Smith (cello)
and current music therapy practica students from
Duquesne University Tiffany Carr (violin) and
Beth Farrell (flute). Together they had the pleasure
of making music as a quartet and when Taylor Fraasch
(age 5) joined in, as a quintet! Taylor began
life as a 23 week gestation premature infant (full
term is 36-40 weeks). She has hearing and sight
impairments and began to speak only a year ago
with the phrase "I love you." She was
a hit on the microphone singing "Twinkle
Twinkle" and "ABC's."
Jay
Anderson, M'04, was hired
full-time upon the completion of a six-month internship
as a music therapist at Patton State Hospital, a
forensic psychiatric facility in San Bernardino,
Calif. While not a requirement for his bachelor's
degree, an internship is one of the prerequisites
for becoming board-certified as a music therapist.
Although Anderson received no credit hours or stipend
for his work as an intern, he considered the experience
invaluable. Anderson explained, "I had been
exposed to most of the difficult situations prior
to being employed full-time. In addition, the experience
of witnessing the effect music therapy can have
on individuals gave me enthusiasm and drive to progress
as a music therapy clinician."
